Visit Uayma!

There are destinations that are worth the trip, that is the case of Uayma, a small town located 15 km from Valladolid.

Uayma is a quiet and hospitable place, with an excellent location due to its proximity to Valladolid, a magical town full of history and cenotes, as well as the archaeological sites of Ek Balam and Chichén Itzá.

Walking through its streets, you’ll get to see Mayan houses, some with modern touches, a mixture of the past coexisting with the present. Also visit “La Casa de los Pianos”, a colonial-style house that functions as a hotel. It has high ceilings, stone floors, gardens, two pianos … and a wonderful view of the temple.

The church of Santo Domingo

It stands out for an imposing and majestic church, the only one of its kind in all of Yucatan due to its viceregal characteristics. Photographing it and getting to know it will leave you with an excellent experience.

The church and former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán are unforgettable. Its facade made with stones extracted from nearby archaeological sites, its decoration of stars and rosettes in red and blue, the borders and several unique details make it a heritage of viceregal architecture in Yucatan that has managed to survive over the years.

If you look closely, you will find symbols, Mudejar influences … and above all, great ornamental beauty.

Today you can appreciate its splendor, tour the church, its great atrium and patio, the sacristy, the choir, the corridors and the attached chapel. Do not forget to visit the extensive gardens. The experience will fill you with peace and tranquility. It functions as a temple in which masses and sacraments are celebrated.

An ancient tradition

In Yucatán, pottery has been very important and is related to its pre-Hispanic tradition. This tradition can be observed in the infinity of Mayan ceramic pieces found in various archaeological sites, exhibited in museums in the state and abroad.

In Uayma there were some workshops that worked the unique pottery in the region. These workshops managed years ago to preserve this activity in the town. At present, the only workshop that works in the region is that of Emilio Dzul. The workshop is kept by his sons with the noble purpose of preserving this traditional activity, despite the many problems they face.

Get to know his workshop and take home a unique piece of millenary tradition!
