These caves are located an hour and a half from Mérida, and it is a natural paradise formed thousands of years ago.
These are the largest and most well-known within the cave system located in the southern part of Yucatán, and have been equipped to safely carry out a journey of approximately 1,000 meters in length through illuminated paths, where the visitor can learn about the natural history and culture of the northern Mayan area in a period that spans more than 10,000 years, from the Pleistocene to contemporary times.
Here you will be able to take a guided walk of around 2kms of caves, which have been a reserve of Mayan treasures for a long time, even here human and animal bones have been found.
In one of its cavities, known as Huechil (from the Mayan huech, armadillo), where remains of extinct fauna were found such as mammoth, bison, and feline bones, which indicate a period of cold climate and vegetation different from the current one, characteristic of a warm and humid environment. Above these there was a level in which stone tools produced by the first inhabitants of the peninsula appeared.
Keep in mind that the guided tour can only be done at certain times, which are: 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
