The Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado (CAPA) of Quintana Roo has announced the construction of a new freshwater extraction and supply zone to meet the growing needs of Tulum’s population.

The project represents an investment of approximately 542.8 million pesos and will be located on a 70-hectare site near the Tulum–Cobá highway — just a few kilometers north-west of Los Árboles Tulum — tapping into the Yucatán Peninsula’s main aquifer.

Plans include:

  • 24 extraction wells, each about 30 meters deep and 14 inches in diameter, with a capacity of 25 liters per second per well.
  • A 14.3-kilometer main aqueduct to transport water to the urban area of Tulum.
  • Modernized infrastructure designed to improve water quality and reduce salinity, ensuring a more reliable and sustainable potable-water supply.

According to CAPA, this initiative forms part of a broader regional strategy to strengthen Tulum’s water resilience and guarantee adequate service as the municipality continues to grow.
